The hard drive in my Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive (hmnhd) has died with the loss of 700GB of data. This is extra annoying as i was in the middle of collecting data from all of my machines into the one place (the dead drive) with the idea that i'd then make a backup of that. Suffice is to say i'm gutted. This is the first hard drive that has completely gone on me with catastrophic data loss. FML.
Logic board, maybe? You're unlikely the first one it's happened to, so find out what others did.

Otherwise it's worth the €700 or whatever for it back.
Yeah, tried connecting it to a desktop, and did a good deal of reading on the Seagate forums. It doesn't spin up and makes this noise http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_X8dIVWy20 The motor bearing has seized. It fell about 30cm onto a wood panelled floor.
ReplyDeleteI'm completely broke atm so sending it off is out of the question. I tried a bit of light "percussive maintenance" with zero effect, there was little chance of it being due to stiction anyway.
That is about all i can do without a clean room ;-) I'll probably avoid Iomega and especially Seagate from now on. This was a comparatively expensive product that failed to deliver at any level.

ReplyDeletespeaking of seagate - my firewire port became loose and fell into the HD after 2 weeks. it was doing nay but sitting on my desk at the time.

ReplyDeleteyea, that drive was supposed to be energy efficient n all this hype, the reason it broke was because of the ridiculously flimsy floating liquid bearing -which is some great tree saving device, just don't drop your hat on it! in addition it was the noisiest drive i've ever owned, AND it never spun down! energy efficient me whole hole!
they've also been gettin some bad press of recent times because of bad firmware that caused your hard drive to brick itself after a time.
i don't care how long they've been in business, their drives are fucking shit at the moment.
Shit 1, I also have an Iomega LDHD-UP 1.5 TB (among others) Slow ass Chinese piece of crap. You could contact them directly and suggest that you demonstrate your percussive maintenance on them at a location of their choosing or alternatively try this type of route for pleasures.
